Trappist Westvleteren 12 is a dark beer with a very lacy white head. Tart dark fruit, raisins, caramel sweetness, warming alcohol, tobacco and leather. It is brewed at the world famous Trappist Abbey of Sint-Sixtus in Westvleteren and it has an ABV of 10,2%.
This beer is rated “the best beer in the world”.
That first pour gave me a towering, lacy white head that lingered forever, and the way the raisin and caramel sweetness rolls into that tobacco finish is genuinely something else. It's a slow sipper for sure, but the warming alcohol makes it perfect for a quiet evening.
The dark fruit and raisin notes hit me right after the pour, and the caramel sweetness balances the warmth perfectly. That tobacco-leather finish lingers like a good cigar, and the lacing stayed creamy to the last drop.
That lacy white head stuck around for the entire glass, which I loved. The caramel sweetness hits right before that warming alcohol and tobacco finish—it's a sipper that feels like a special occasion.
